The Trust was established by Deed of Trust dated 9th and 13th March 1989 by the Most Honourable The Marquis of Lansdowne and The Right Reverend Michael Hare Duke then Bishop of St. Andrews, Dunkeld & Dunblane.

The Trust purposes were updated in 2017.

The objects of the Trust are now to provide financial aid to individuals in full-time education domiciled in the Scottish local authority areas of Perth & Kinross, Fife, Stirling, Clackmannanshire, Angus and Dundee who are considered by the Trustees to be in need of assistance, in particular those who show promise of educational, cultural or social potential and who are likely to contribute in the future to the community in which they settle.
